There are several devices available to meet a variety of purposes, depending on the type, size, and amount of measurement required. The unit of measurement for surface tension is Dynes/cm. To provide good compatibility between inks and substrates, the surface tension must be equivalent to that of the substrate. When printing on non-porous materials like plastic and polymer, the surface must be changed so that the surface tension rises to a certain level.

What are Dyne test pens?⁣
 

Dyne testing is a technique for scaling the tension when wetting a stable and discovering the minimal surface pressure of a precise liquid blend that allows it to remain propagated on the hard surface. This is measured in units of surface tension (dynes per centimeter, or dynes/cm) and represents the approximate energy needed to distribute other fluids across the surface. The method is described in ASTM D2578, "Standard Test Method for Wetting Tension of Polyethylene and Polypropylene Films.

Test Procedure Guidelines
 

  1. To avoid curling or other distortions, place the sample on a clean, level surface and, if required, fasten the edges.
  2. Take note of the humidity and temperature in the area. Allow the sample to stabilize if its temperature deviates from the surrounding air temperature.
  3. The sample should be tested at a minimum of three locations: 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 of the way across the film portion. Testing the exterior edges is also advised.
  4. Because filthy surfaces might lose their wettability, try not to touch or contaminate the surface being evaluated. Before continuing, clean the testing area.
  5. Make use of only clean, new pens.
  6. Pens should be used and stored at a temperature that is equivalent to room temperature.
 

How To use & Measuring Surface Energy / Tension
 

  1. Simply drawing a line across the substrate or material to be utilized or processed is how the test is conducted. If the line stays intact for precisely four seconds before peripheral shrinkage occurs, the substrate's dyne level matches the magnet dye test pen's dyne value.
  2. If the indicated line instantly becomes droplets, the substrate's or material's dyne value is lower than the magnet dyne test pen's dyne value. (To get the precise dyne value, utilize the Magnet dyne Pen's lower dyne value and so on.)
  3. The dyne value of the substrate material is greater than the dyne value of the magnet dyne test pen used if, after 4 seconds, the marked line does not break into droplets (peripheral shrinkage). (To determine the precise dyne value, use a higher dyne value of the Magnet dyne pen, and so on.
  4. Avoid conducting the test again on the same section of the material or substrate.
  5. Make use of only clean, new pens.
  6. The highlighted line that stays perfectly intact for four seconds prior to droplets or peripheral shrinkage occurring is the appropriate dyne level.
